Americans take our extraordinary standard of living for granted because it's been extraordinary for over three hundred years. What we wonder, perpetually, is why others don't catch up to us? I tried answering that question before, and ticked off a lot of people, but reached no consensus. The answer to that question may be found, I contend, by finding others with comparable standards of living, and seeing what we all have in common. Ask Jay Chen whether people in Hong Kong are living on borrowed effort?
