That's actually not true.

Hell, video - (MPEG2 for example) is constantly compressed and decompressed (CODEC) all over the place. (Take DirectTV for example)

Audio requires a thousand times less bandwidth (read - you have 1000 times more time to do something like compress the data) than standard NTSC video - digitized audio is actually carried in between frames of digital video with plenty of space to spare.

Audio - of CD quality, let alone low end audio like the 12KHz or so bandwidth restricted phone, is extremely compressable (sp?). MP3 is a proper example of that - even your computer is capable of compressing MP3 real time
