GAAP earnings - OK only a small loss during one of the worst years in the history of the semiconductor industry.

And as far as incremental profits go, they don't flow to the bottom line - fixed costs must be accounted for.

I agree. However the expression "lose money on each chip and make up for it with volume" implies that there is an incremental loss which is not there.
