Comparing Apple and Palm goofs:

If the new G4s are as unimpressive as the rumor sites are reporting, the CPU situation is still deteriorating. How far does it have to go 'till something snaps?

They have OS X and can port it. Would an initial port really hurt Apple so much? No, because drivers etc would not be available so no Mac users would be lost initially. A lot of Linux and Windows geeks would give OS X a try just out of curiosity. Eventually they might start loosing hardware sales but those sales would probably be offset by selling more Operating system CDs. There's no real reason they can't port and sell OS X. The only question is when is the best time to release a port. The software must be mature I think else they alienate new customers. The software on Mac machines must also be more mature so that Mac people won't bolt to cheaper hardware right away, and Apple can maximize it's profits on hardware as long as possible.

My partner just got a brand new PC made by a local company. 1.7 Ghz, DVD burner, DDR ram, good solid case, wireless keyboard and mouse. Not a bad machine. Impressive 3D performance. He's also running two servers on Dell Laptops, also wireless. Some snazzy hardware. Granted the iMac is snazzy, but so is his stuff. Now what happens if Microsoft finally gets it together with security and stability as Gates has declared on security?
