Anyone,

For graphics users, PowerComputings plans to market both type computers is no big deal. It would be nice to be able to choose which platform to use. I was pretty excited by CHRP. Personally I have no use for Windows 95 it just duplicates the MacOS badly. However WindowsNT is a different story because 3D Studio (Windows only) and Softimage (WindowsNT only) run on it. And this is where Windows is superior to the Mac. There is little high-end 3D software for the Mac as of today. Electric Image/form*Z for the Mac is the rough equivilent of 3D Studio which is midrange 3D software. Gates made a very good move buying Softimage and porting it from SGI to NT because all of the 3D image companies in Los Angeles have been bent over for years by SGI and there is a lot of animosity towards the company (SGI). After Gates bought Softimage 3D developers jumped on the bandwagon and 3D effects companies are rapidly expanding in this area saving lots of money. The Mac is just out of the picture on the very high end unfortunately although some companies (Babylon 5) still use it for broadcast TV (as opposed to Movies).

CHRP would have changed this situation because guys like me could have run everything except our high end 3D stuff on the otherwise superior MacOS and still be able to use Softimage or 3D Studio. Don't even know now if SoftImage would run on a CHRP because it requires an OpenGL board. So... maybe it WILL run on a PowerComputing PC and we will still be able to use the Rhapsody for everything else. However not too many people can afford this high end technology. Softimage=$9-15K, OpenGL board = several thousand bucks, 3D studio = $3K or so. Electric Image runs $3K for the cheap version and form*Z is $1-1.4K. Not for amatuers.
