Perhaps more (you have to consider the opportunity cost too). But then how much would one pay to buy out 3 big competitors (CPQ,HWP,SGI) ? Much less , I think.
Micron is following a similar strategy in DRAM, that is killing off competitors, one after another: TI, Toshiba, Rambus, now they are doing it to Hynix. Intel has done well with this strategy. But as much as the killing of the competitors helps Micron / Intel, it helps their surviving competitors Infineon etc / AMD. AMD has realized a bit of the upside by taking chunk of old Cyrix share, and may benefit again in the server space.
There is definitely a lot of void created. There may be more void, since Sun seems to be weak, and may not be able to keep up. We may be down to IBM, Intel, and AMD (if they don't trip up with Hammer).
