HK PRESS:PCCW To Up China Staff To 1500 Vs 1000 By End-02
January 20, 2002

Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (PCW) plans to increase it mainland staff to 1,500 employees from 1,000 by the end of 2002, the Hong Kong Economic Times reports.

The staff total includes employees of joint venture companies, the paper says.

Citing PCCW Chief Operating Officer William Cheung, the paper says the company is eyeing the mainland market as the engine for future growth as the telecom market in Hong Kong becomes saturated.

"I won't be surprised if we derive half of our revenue from China in a few years," Cheung told the paper.

However, the paper says PCCW's mainland operations currently comprise fringe operations such as software development, telephone directories and telephone service centers.

PCCW's Hong Kong operation is under continued pressure to downsize. The company said earlier it would freeze wages and head counts this year after firing 506 of 14,000 employees early in December.
