wbmw,

When did you think Hammer would launch, get an x86-64 Microsoft OS, and get as much x86-64 based software to run on it as Itanium would have with IA-64?

Are you talking actual software or press releases? I don't know how much actual software there is, and wonder if any will be written. For a market of 162 chips sold outside of some IBM experimental Titanic supercomputer, I don't think there is any market for IA-64 software.

BTW, has anyone been keeping track of the ratio # of press releases / Itanium chips sold? I think we should have a celebration when (or should I say if) the number of chips sold reaches the number of press releases. But at a pace of 162 chips sold in 3 months, or little over 54 CPUs per month, I don't see any hope of these hot chips ever catching up with the hot air generated by INTC PR machine.

In the quarter ended Sept. 30, Gartner Dataquest estimates that Intel shipped about 2,162 Itanium chips, with 2,000 of those going to IBM for two big servers that use 1,000 Itaniums apiece.
