most music oriented mp3s have a sample rate of 44khz. the bitrate varies a lot though usually from 128-320kbps. they are not "just as good" however. i could send you all sorts of clips that encoders can't handle at any bitrate. anyway as long as you're happy with the fidelity that's all that matters. i suspect your ears are not as sharp as a younger fella's ears. of course i happen to think i am far superior to the average listener when it comes to spotting artifacts, but i suspect that is because i have highly trained myself to lookout for them. i have encoded thousands of mp3s myself at different bitrates with numerous different encoders and have conducted thousands of listening tests.

trust me when i tell you that you cannot take a 1411kb/s bitrate and shrink it to 128 or even 256 without losing some quality. of course it is more noticeable on some songs and less noticeable on others. but it aint cd quality. and to make matters worse a lot of mp3 players don't decode mp3s correctly. the most popular player is winamp and their players are notorious for poor decoding quality.

i suggest using winamp 2.22 for the best results. you won't hear any little buzzing sounds that you hear in some of the later versions at the beginning and end of some songs.
