I don't think that Oslo was forced on Israel by the Clinton administration. The first Bush administration forced the Madrid talks on Israel; they broke the ice. Yossi Beilin and Shimon Peres sought out the secret talks with the PLO and then presented Shamir with almost a fait accompli.

Of course Clinton & many others hopped on the train once it left the station. Many people, even those fully aware of Arafat's history, thought that if you piled enough benefits on one side and enough penalties on the other, even Arafat would make rational choices.

As we have all seen, they were wrong. When you believe in your heart of hearts that you are a second Saladin, you don't make rational choices.

If the Palestinians had had a Musharaff, it might have worked. But as in 1948, they are suffering the consequences of their disasterous leadership.
