If AMD is able to get their x86-64 architecture out the door by the end of 2002 I can't see how Intel could force AMD to change their own architecture. With the EU already investigating them, and Microsoft having its own difficulties with the DOJ, a monopolistic move such as that would most certainly bring unwanted scrutiny in their direction.
Especially considering AMD would have at least a one year headstart on Intel. Whether there is OS support or not AMD would have x number of chips already out there.
