First, what makes you think that x86-64 will be the path of least resistance? They still need a 64-bit OS, and they still need to recompile applications to take advantage of the new instructions. They will have neither of these for a long time, and without 64-bit support, it won't be competing with Itanium.

As for megahertz, do you really think it matters to IT professionals that are used to low megahertz cores like the UltraSparc and PA-RISC?
