Let me set the record straight - I am not insulting Jeff Jacobs or Qualcomm's management, and understand completely the business rationale for making these investments.

Having operated a doofus division with arguably worse results (albeit on a much smaller scale) I have a personal appreciation for what is involved and the potential pitfalls, especially with international ventures.

However, good intentions, hard work, high net worth, high IQ, or whatever other metrics one cares to use does not necessarily lead to great investment results in this milieu.

So the point maybe we can agree on is that the Evangelist Division (if this is less "insulting" than Doofus division) is a necessary part of the Qualcomm business model - and perhaps we can agree that when evaluating the investment metrics of the Qualcomm business, this activity is just as integral as designing ASICs or collecting royalties.
