The only way it alters the competitive landscape is by further fragmenting IBM's offerings. "Hello, IBM, we need some computer power; what would you recommend?" "Well, we have Linux, MVS (or whatever they call it these days), AIX (or whatever they call it these days), Windows (in its multiple incarnations), yada-yada, ... . And we do that on mainframes, Power4, X86, Itanium, yada-yada, ... ."
"The software I want to run is available on SPARC Solaris." "(long pause) Oh."
For a while, I thought IBM was moving to unify its platforms, but now they seem to be going the other direction.
