Those Hapless Canadians
Yesterday we noted that some Canadian politicians have been running
around Ottawa clucking about the need to protect Canada's
sovereignty and independence. Here's an item from the Canadian
Broadcasting Corp. that gives a sense of just how independent
Canada really is:

The Department of National Defence says it's still not sure
how Canadian troops will get to Afghanistan.

About 750 Canadian soldiers are supposed to join a
U.S.-led operation in Kandahar by mid-February. But the
military doesn't have planes big enough to get the troops
and their equipment there quickly.

The Canadian military is still waiting to see whether the
U.S. will be able to send some of its planes to pick up
Canadian troops and fly them to Afghanistan.

The problem is the U.S. is already flying in its own
soldiers.

Canada is looking at renting a civilian cargo plane to
transport the troops and their equipment. But so far, it's
been unable to find anything suitable.
