People seem to be worried that in a couple of years Intel might have something to compete with Hammer. They don't seem to consider what Dirk's guys might come out with in a couple of years time. As for what AMD need investment capital for, they are going to need a load of extra fab space in the next couple of years to build all those Hammers. This is a great time to snap up spare capacity at bargain basement prices. Personally I like the speculation about a share in the IBM SOI fab.
