Intel hopes to break into the RISC market by offering a complete 64-bit solution from the beginning. Those that have invested highly into 64-bit RISC machines don't care about x86 32-bit legacy. So I will ask you again why you think x86-64 will be the path of least resistance that could threaten Itanium success?

A better question to ask is, "Why does Intel need Itanium?"

It's helpful to go back to the reasons why Itanium exists in the first place, the problem it was originally supposed to solve. Think back to the early '90s. The problem was that the RISC guys were way, way ahead of Intel's x86 in performance, and a lot of pundits were predicting that the RISCs would pull further ahead. IA-64 was a fresh architecture that would leapfrog the RISCs and help Intel capture the high-end.

Flash forward to the present. The lowly x86 is the fastest thing around (mainly for economic, rather than technical, reasons - large profits enable and justify a large R&D effort), blowing away SPARC in performance. Isn't that funny? And the first IA-64 chip is a joke, a total dog. So why does Intel still need Itanium? Why not re-allocate those resources to a more profitable use? "It's 64-bits!" is not a good enough reason to keep Itanium around, especially when you can easily extend the x86 to 64-bits.
