There's a couple of articles in Newsweek that you might find interesting. One highlights 3 black CEOs, Richard Parsons of AOL, Ken Chenault of AmEx, and Stanley O'Neal of Merrill. The other is The New Rules for Black Men. One rule is "If someone is bringing out your most self-destructive tendencies, acknowledge that that person is not a friend." Another is "Recognize that being true to yourself is not the same as being true to a stupid stereotype." That about covers the Uncle Tom issue.

He also makes a comment about being observant and noticed that Chinese-American math students often studied in groups, whereas Black students tended to study alone out of pride. When spurred to emulate the Chinese-American students their level of success in math soared. A lot of this is not rocket science but just common sense.
