As I have mentioned at various points, your assumption that I am a careerist angling for a place in the Administration is quite wrong. For various reasons, I stayed home to take care of my son, and thus practically took myself out of the game. I mainly do "piece work", public relations stuff, like brochures, mass circulation letters, newsletters, and such, for professional associations. Occasionally, I have published on topics closer to my heart, but I have no regular venue, and it is catch as catch can. The last big thing I did was to co- author a "how- to" book on an aspect of fundraising with my wife, and because she is the actual fundraiser, I did not share by- line credit, but "ghosted" my part (of course, I received a substantial acknowledgement).
I have met a lot of people (for example, Bill Kristol, Arianna Huffington, Charles Murray, Robert Bork, and many others), but know none of them well. Some of them remember me, in a vague way, as a gadfly with an unusual range of knowledge, but I am not a "player". I occasionally go to conferences, I am never invited to parties.
It is true, some of that could change in a relatively short time, depending on the luck of the draw, but an official position in either the Party or the Administration would be a long shot, and one that I do not have much interest in. Even with considerable political interests, my ultimate interests are more literary and philosophical, and I have a happy family, as well. I do not aspire to 16 hour days......... |
