Reading some of the links listed on the site that you posted I may have found the reason why my Pentium II wasn't acting like I thought it should.

Regardless, when it can be used, it provides supreme protection with a host of desirable features. On a P4 system with 256Mb RAM and 20Gb available drive space, there was no noticeable impact on system performance. It crippled a P2. "

Guess what that machine is...a P2. I uninstalled Norton System Works 2002 and it runs like a new machine. Will install AVG tomorrow.
