How do I establish whether software purchased at an auction is legitimate or not?

microsoft.com

A significant percentage of the Microsoft software sold on auction sites is counterfeit or otherwise illegitimate. Microsoft works in cooperation with auction sites such as eBay to ensure the software being offered is legal.

Microsoft monitors all eBay sites and conducts searches daily to identify those auctions suspected of offering counterfeit or infringing software.
eBay is notified of the suspect auction and Microsoft will request that the auction be terminated within 24 hours.
The vendor is then urged to end its illegal actions, and the bidders are warned and directed to information on software piracy.
