Hi Cobalt,

Have a look at the USA holds by sector. Note... the USA not the ROW (Rest Of World).

I quote from the link..

More than a decade later, this committee continues to control the legal economy of Iraq. It operates in private amid widespread criticism.

This is stupidity pursued by other means imho. The idea of wars and stuff is you minimize the enemy and kick the crap out of him. This is not what's happening in the middle east w.r.t Iraq sanctions. The USA, along with some dumb idiots (Britain) are doing just about everything they can to unite the Arab world (I'm talking about the whole populations, not just politicians) against them.

Oh yeah, there is such things as sanction busting and trade with counties like Russia too.

Put all these things together, and you see a policy that is not working, and actually making things worse for the USA not better.

A solution is just a matter of realizing you are doing something wrong (in the sense the intended effect is not happening) and changing your actions to suit.

Wake up and smell the coffee America.

edit So the question is - should we be attempting to force Saddam to back down?

Of course. Why target the whole Iraqi population though, and make enemies of them all? Just drop something on Sadaams head imho.
