Mathematicians have been promising super compression forever. I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm sure it will get steadily better, but we won't make bandwidth obsolete in 2 years time. That's a ridiculous thought. As to whether we should spend money to overhaul healthcare and medicare, I'd say sure. But the engine of growth is the Internet. They need to remove the obstacles to its growth so that the economy can grow. Ubiquitous broadband to the home will usher in a whole host of new ideas and technologies that will complete transform the way the consumer uses the Internet. But the government needs to decide if they want it to happen in this decade or over the next 30 years. If they opt out of pushing broadband, they will hobble this economy's growth, while other countries leap ahead of us and realize the full promise of the Internet and all the riches that will accrue as a result.
