AMD's advanced PowerNow technology lets their notebooks run at full speed even on battery while changing voltage and speed many times per second to conserve the battery when it's not needed. Intel's speedstep has to be rebooted to change speeds, and their speedstepII pale, limited, copy of PowerNow doesn't work and had to be disabled on Dell (and other) notebooks.
