You're correct, Microsoft bought SoftImage. I believe Mainframe is one of the larger licensed users of the software and helps them in much of their testing. I'm sure they're aware of the enhancements and add-ons that they've developed. You also bring up a good point, which is that at some point, there is interesting speculative appeal to MFE. Look what happened to Pixar, they got snapped up pretty quickly after going public. All the other CGI guys have large investor's as well -Dreamworks owns some of Pacific Data Images and ILM and Digital Domain (mostly special effects guys) have partners.

By the way, I believe Donkey Kong used motion capture and it was wildly expensive. I think MediaLab has lost boatloads of francs on that one for Canal Plus. I've even heard they want to sell out of MediaLab. I guess there's no one perfect way to CGI animate. You have do play to your strengths and constantly look at new technology. I think there are 3-4 people at Mainframe that do nothing but that.
