So, Karen, what did you think of the sentence?

I blame the media for this. If you know nothing about this case but sound bites, you see a big bully beating a scrawny coach to death, for which a 3-5 year sentence is obviously not enough. This sound-bite opinion-making is a real problem in our society and it is inflamed by loud-mouth celebrity news stars.

Watching the trial, what I saw was a couple of jerks, overgrown children, who too easily resorted to fisticuffs in a conflict. They both "lost it," which is a terrible thing to do in front of children. I thought the jury did a good job of coming up with involuntary manslaughter. I agreed with the verdict and didn't see any reason to deviate from the standard penalty of 3-5.

I once was a juror in a trial where the prosecution looked to titillate and inflame. I thought that the prosecution was doing that here. Junta wanted to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter to save the children from having to testify and a trial being broadcast. I think the reasonable tack would have been for the prosecution to agree. It seemed to me that the trial was just too much "fun" for them. Likewise, the judge's righteous indignation in sentencing, complete with rolled eyes, seemed unprofessional to me. His little demonstration at the sentencing reminded me a bit of Judge Ito.
