Monday January 28, 8:09 am Eastern Time Press Release SOURCE: Motient Corporation Motient Is First Wireless Data Network to Provide Coverage In Every MSA in the USA Continued Network Expansion Offers Network Coverage To Millions of People in Thousands of Cities RESTON, Va., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motient Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: MTNTQ - news), owner and operator of the nation's largest wireless data network, reported today that with the recent expansion of its two-way, wireless packet data network into the Yuma, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) it has become the first and only wireless data network to serve all of America's MSAs. Motient (previously NASDAQ: MTNT) operates its nationwide network with more than 2,275 base stations, ``touching'' more than 220 million people -- 30 percent more than its closest competitor -- in every state in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and subscribers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
``Motient has attained preeminence in its network coverage,'' said Dennis W. Matheson, senior vice president and Chief Technology Officer of Motient. ``Only Motient provides the pervasive nationwide network coverage that equates to superior in-building, on-street and in-vehicle reach with the highest capacity of any wireless data provider. Our roster of blue-chip corporate subscribers who demand always-on wireless connectivity excellence include UPS, IBM, NCR and Sears. We are the largest and the best -- Motient is America's Data Network.''
Motorola originally constructed the network to the specifications of IBM's technical field service staff. The network protocol, DataTAC, uses an innovative overlapping radio frequency (RF) system called Single Frequency Reuse (SFR), that positions multiple base stations that operate on the same frequency throughout a metropolitan area. This technology was developed to allow the network to provide superior reach deep inside buildings, where most computer rooms are located, as well as strong on-street coverage.
Originally named the ARDIS network, today's Motient network has been expanded and enhancements added allowing nationwide growth utilizing transmission speeds of 19.2 kbps, three times faster than many competing networks. In some areas, notably New York City, Motient layers several cells, allowing the network to reach an effective throughput of 81.6 kbps. Built-in redundancy and fault tolerance provides 99.99 percent availability and reliability for the millions of messages sent each day. Additionally, for more than a year, Motient customers have enjoyed Canadian ``roaming,'' and are able to send and receive wireless data over a network operated by Bell Mobility.
According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, an MSA is a central urban area with a population of more than 50,000 and, in some cases, comprised of several cities and towns. As per their most recent calculations, Census estimates there are approximately 276 MSAs, all of which are now touched by the Motient data network. Additionally, the network serves all of the 520 most populated U.S. cities; all of the nation's top 100 airports and many miles of Amtrak's high-capacity corridors.
