It is easy for the losers to attribute all the success of M$ to their ethical lapses, while ignoring other traits of the
company that has allowed it to stay on top.


That's certainly an oversimplification of reality. It's very true for some but definitely false for many. There's virtually no way in hell any company can compete with Microsoft if Microsoft convinces the PC builders to bundle Microsoft's S.W product with the PC. When a consumer buys a PC already loaded with one application, do you really think they'll go out and spend additional $$$ just to buy a competing S/W? NEVER. And that's the story behind the success of Microsoft.

Thanks for the laugh! Could it well be that many of the S/W flaws in Microsoft's products is directly attributable to this?
