The Elegant Universe -- I heartily recommend it as THE BOOK that can explain these bizarre things to laypeople; vastly superior to the more widely celebrated offerings by Stephen Hawking. Greene make repeated and richly imaginative analogies to things we encounter in our daily lives to aid the lay person in grasping concepts which would otherwise be beyond the reach of most of us. I am still working through the string theory part and it is an enormous intellectual challenge. I hold out hope that it may nonetheless be do-able simply because of Brian Greene's qualities as a writer. In case you can't tell, I LOVE THIS BOOK.
