3 - I think what you are trying to get at is that we don't give up on difficult things simply because they are difficult, however sometimes we do, and sometimes we should. Also the question with gun control is not just the difficulty but the desirability of the goal.

We don't give up on difficult things that could prevent deaths....that's why we continue to push for a cure for cancer......which btw I think is the more difficult of the two tasks since it's now looking like there will not be one cure for all cancers but one for each type of cancer.......and why we continue to push for a ban on guns. "We" meaning those people other than the NRA and their supporters, and gun advocates in general.

Now you can wave the flag all you want but those "who live by the gun, die by gun". Some things are just common sense and all the complicated and intricate arguments to the contrary, supported by innumerable links, don't change that fact.
