We don't give up on difficult things that could prevent deaths...

Which is why we should not give up on allowing private ownership of guns and extending the number of juristictions where concealed carry permits are available.

cure for cancer......which btw I think is the more difficult of the two tasks since it's now looking like there will not be one cure for all cancers but one for each type of cancer.....

If we are to remain an open and free society with any respect for constitutional rights (not just the rights under the 2nd ammendment) and personal privacy the cure for most or even all of these types of cancer is easier then controling guns. Presumably we will eventually cure cancer or atleast the most common forms of it. We will never be able to stop things like guns or drugs without changing our whole society.

Some things are just common sense

Yes like the fact that people should be allowed the means to defend themselves against criminals, and the fact that criminals will be able to get guns in an open society.
