What is the argument for GM foods? Pesticides? Some farmers, addicted to highly toxic chemicals that they have to borrow money for, will erroneously tell you this. In fact the US government themselves to their credit have run totally organic farms that use no pesticide, herbicide or fertilizer, since 1934. These model farms are run in the same regions as commercial farms that use all the available chemicals. It is a matter of record that these totally "organic" farms have 96% of the crop yield in abundance and quality of the chemically soaked farms nearby.
All chemicals are totally unnecessary by 67 years of experimental proof. And since they are enormously expensive and dangerous to apply to the extreme, to the farmer and perhaps dangerous to the consumer as well, we have to wonder why farmers use them at all! They could save their loans and farms by not using them. Make themselves rich. The answer to this question is that farmers, who ordinarily seek the best of scientific research to maximize yield and save money, are chemically hypnotized into stupidity by the billion dollar chemical industry.
Let's face it, farmers have never been accused of being the brightest lights on the Christmans tree. That they should buy the speil of the chemical industry that is at once driving them ever closer to bankruptcy is proverbial. I had to laugh when the farmers with long faces complained of losing the family farms by foreclosure. They got what they deserved when they bought every fancy tractor and every fancy chemical that the salesman had to sell them. And grew what the government a___h__s told them to. They look like rubes with 200 fuller brushes and no food money after the city slicker leaves the doorstep.
Farmers could make their own tractors from old trucks for 1/4 the price they pay Harris or Caterpillar. And they would be safer and pull adequately. All a tractor is, is a low speed transmission locked to a large wheel drive, which should be front and back so it does not overturn. I could build one deluxe for 25,000. Farmers pay 150,000. They could market their own products and mill them co-operatively in town and make 5 times what the chains or mills will pay them. They do not need to use, nor do we need on our rice krispies, one gram of DDT, or malathion. (CDN farmers still use DDT!)
I have heard their complaints for 40 years. Why don't they act? Why don't they think for once? Stop complaining about the lack of rain, irrigate etc...
