The implication is that character is set at such a low level as to be irreparably flawed as a circumstance of birth or genetic makeup. I rank the remark lower than you. The subject seems to be well read and academically rigorous in his approach. I consider him in some respects, a worthy liberal adversary; provoking thought and challenge on a variety of topics. It is sad that topics and issues get clouded or lost by personal wranglings. The "sow's ear" remark excuses attitudes and places one adversarial position above reproach. I don't accept the hard coding of positions on social issues. I do not believe principle to be flexible but many of the topics we discuss here can be more clearly established and contextually wrestled over as time reveals increasing complexities.
