I think it's more a question of authoritative source text. If one wishes to discuss the teachings of Jesus the Bible speaks for itself. If one doesn't accept the Bible then there is no reason to concern oneself with what Jesus "really" taught.

Greg is correct. Jesus is conspicuous in that so many strive to reconcile their views with His teachings while at the same time making no comparable effort to reconcile with the teachings of the Buddha, Lao Tze, Mohammed, etc. Why is that?
