>What else do you have? XP is no new core vis a vis T-Bird. They're all Athlons. Read it again. How can anyone call Quantispeed an architecture? It's like calling horsepower an engine design.

It's definitely the Palomino core, and not the T-bird core. It gets higher IPC, that's a difference.

Regardless, it really doesn't make a difference to me... marketing is marketing, and it's different from engineering-things are less cut and dry. There was nothing wrong with the PR rating way back when, and there's nothing wrong with model numbers now.

The fact is, that AMD is pretty close to Intel in performance, and way ahead in price/performance. They can go as far as that takes them. If AMD falls way behind, those "in the know" won't buy and will recommend more against purchasing AMD.

The model numbers have just been a nice little stopgap way to make customers think twice before buying based solely on megahertz. I'm not sure that it's worked, but I sure don't have a better short term idea for AMD.

Regardless, the bottom line is that I'd still buy one, and I'd still recommend them; Quantispeed; Schmantispeed- however, if I wanted the absolute best performance, regardless of cost, I'd likely buy a P4.
