LG wins orders Compaq orders for P4-M notebooks

LG Electronics has received orders for Compaq Computer’s new notebook model running on the mobile Pentium 4 (P4-M). The South Korea-based company is scheduled to begin shipping 80,000-90,000 units monthly of the new model in March or April. Since LG will continue to manufacture the Presario 1700 as well, its shipments to Compaq are projected to rise to one million units in 2002, compared to last year’s 300,000-400,000 units.
The new model is a follow-up to the Presario 2700, produced by Quanta Computer. The Presario 2700 runs on the PIII-M. It is reported that Compaq had originally planned to hand orders for the new model to Quanta.
The order increase to LG could signify more than just a simple decline of Compaq business to Taiwan, since the projected one million unit shipments is a perfect opportunity for LG to gain experience in notebook mass production. With advantages in TFT LCD and memory suppliers, it should not be difficult for South Korea to strengthen the supply chain between component suppliers and notebook makers.
Some Taiwanese notebook makers said that interaction between South Korean notebook manufacturers such as LG and Samsung Electronics and international vendors is definitely a concern. However, Taiwanese companies’ expansion in China is way ahead of their South Korean competitors’, and Taiwan’s TFT LCD industry is quickly catching up as well. Sourcing notebooks from Taiwanese companies will continue to be more cost-effective in the future, they added. |
