Watergate was actually a lot worse. There you had a high IQ paranoid President who was out of control. Now we have.... well... to be kind, a dufus and a puppet in the throne. So, as far as the problem at the top, we don't really need to worry about that. There is no there, there. Bush 43 is simply a graft-acceptor. He isn't really evil in the classic sense of a Stalin or a Hitler. He lacks the ability. What is kinda troublesome is the fact that there are so many conspirators though. From Cheney, to Card, Rove, carlucci, Mossberger, Greeespan and down through the ranks, there is a lot of dirt and a lot of answering that ought to go on.
I think the question the American people are too stupid to ask but ought to is this one. The counterparties to Enron's End Runs around the tax system involved transactions with Citibank, JP Morgan and a number of other bankers. These self-same bankers were touting Enron shares to their brokerage customers while the banks were fully aware of debt issues and off shore tax havens that their brokerage customers were never informed of. Were the bank guilty of fiduciary malfeasance with their customers? Of course they were. Can we get a case going that would make the poor investors and 401(k) holder some restitution from these scum-bucket bankers? Well, it's in the courts, but I'm not holding my breath. The real shame of the Enron situation is that it exposes that the corruption of our financial house of cards is systemic. There's not a whole hell of a lot about the American financial system that is honest or trustworthy. And this is what we are destroying Afghanistan for. No wonder they hate us.
