ENDORSEMENT FOR HEWLETT DEAL
The International Data Corporation, a leading technology research group, gave a carefully qualified endorsement yesterday to the contested Hewlett- Packard plan to buy Compaq Computer (news/quote). In a detailed 41-page assessment sent to its corporate clients, the research firm acknowledged the risks of the deal, but stated, "I.D.C. believes that H.-P. and Compaq may very well be better off together than apart." The strategic rationale for the merger, the report noted, is to move quickly to become a full-service supplier of hardware, software and services to corporate customers, who are steadily moving to Internet-based computing. "H.P. and Compaq are making their strategic move for the next wave — and they are making their move right now," the report concluded. The merger plan is being challenged by the heirs of the Hewlett-Packard (news/quote) founders, led by Walter B. Hewlett, a Hewlett board member, who asserts that the deal is too risky and costly.
