Molly's concern, and I share this, is that the the U.S. is simply acting as an arrogant bully, trying always to have its own way, however hypocritically, and that this is gonna cause an eternal cycle of resentment around the world. There was a telling moment on NRP's "Talk of the Nation" today, when the topic was "Writing the State of the Union" speech. One caller suggested that the Speech include language to the effect that the the government would only tell the truth. She was immediately sniffed at by the host. This is what is wrong with us. We have all these homilies about freedom, democracy, the American Dream and the usual litany, and any thinking individual in the world who isn't in on the take knows that it is all a lie. That's what will end the American Empire, its own hypocrisy and hubris. Enron is just a harbinger of things to come. I believe you miss the point if you merely dispute Ivins on the Guantanamo situation. She was discussing a much greater malaise in the American political/economic system. You are looking at the tree and not the forest of deception surrounding you. -Ray
