Hynix to Limit Chip Sales, Says Demand Exceeds Supply (Update1)
By Ian King

quote.bloomberg.com

Seoul, Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc. said demand for its chips has outstripped supply, forcing it to sell chips only to its largest customers until the end of March.

Citing a ``demand and a supply shortfall,'' Hynix said it plans to limit sales to ``strategic clients.'' The Korean company didn't provide any details of its assertion, which came days after Micron Technology Inc. said talks to take over the Korean company were at a standstill.

Micron and Hynix began talks to create the world's largest maker of computer memory chips after a slump in demand cut sales in the industry by two-thirds last year. Demand for dynamic random access memory chips is key to the future of Hynix, which is the third largest maker behind Samsung Electronics Co. and Micron.

Some analysts said they were skeptical about Hynix's claim.

``It runs contrary to a market where component availability is improving to the point where we are expecting a PC price war,'' said Keon Han, an electronics analyst at Bear Stearns Asia in Hong Kong. Keon said he wasn't aware of PC makers reporting shortages of memory chips.

A combination of debt close to four times its market capital and a glut of chips that sent priced below the cost of production forced Hynix to turn to creditors for two multi-billion dollar bailouts from creditors last year.
