Chartered Chip Venture With Agere May Be Set Back (Update1)
By Alan Patterson

Singapore, Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. said a $700 million venture to develop new chipmaking technology with Agere Systems Inc. may be set back after both companies reported losses last year.

``We may have to change the nature of the relationship,'' Chartered Chief Executive Officer Barry Waite said on a conference call following the company's announcement of a fourth-quarter loss. ``There is nothing to announce on that right now. I'm just speculating.''

Sales of communications semiconductors by Chartered, the third-largest maker of chips for other companies, and Agere fell amid the worst slump in the industry's history. Agere, spun off by Lucent Technologies Inc. two years ago, last week said it would sell a chip plant in Florida. Chartered needs to complete the project to catch up with rivals, some investors said.

``They are the weakest player in Asia,'' said Ian Lui, who counts Chartered shares among the $500 million he helps manage for Allianz Asset Management. ``What investors are looking for is prospects for the future.''

Two years ago, Chartered and Agere announced a five-year partnership to develop technology for chips with transistors as small as 0.08 micron in width for networking gear. The most advanced chips that Chartered sells have transistors measuring 0.18 micron.
