PETALUMA, Calif.-- Plasma etch systems supplier Tegal Corp. here today reported a net loss of $2.5 million on revenues of $2.4 million in the company's fiscal third quarter, ended Dec. 31.

Tegal's sales were 79.5% lower than $11.7 million in the period a year ago. The company had a net income of $7.6 million in the fiscal quarter last year, which included the sale of a non-exclusive technology license that resulted in a net profit that period.

"Our strategy in this current downturn is to position Tegal to be ready to deliver to our customers enhanced product offerings when the semiconductor markets recover," said Michael Parodi, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Tegal. "As we move to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2002 [which ends in March], we expect revenues will continue to be negatively impacted by the slowness in the semiconductor industry."
