Something to keep in mind is this FASB 142 rule which needs to be addressed in the first half. IBM takes over a number of companies each year so it brings in to question how they handle "good will". Since IBM is always quick to point out that they report "real" earnings and include all expenses that would say that if they have to take major write-downs of "good will" it could really impact the first and second quarters. Maybe this is why Gerstner chose March 1 as his turn-over date. This puts any financial clean-up under Palmisano early in his tenure and gets this issue out of the way. Or maybe there is none of this good will on the books and it is a non-issue. I sent an Email to IBM asking how FASB 142 will affect the first half and got a "canned" response from an automated machine which basically said I sent the note to the wrong IBM function. It was the address at the main web site so I don't know what was wrong with that.
I guess we'll have to look at the financial details ourselves. Any thoughts?
