Jim, speaking of Hammer, will it have a new name?

AMD losing marbles with new Hammer names?

Dear Hector, please don't do it
By Mike Magee, 28/01/2002 08:44:52 BST

CHRIS TOM at AMD Zone has found that Advanced Micro Devices has registered five fresh names and he speculates that they could be names for 64-bit Hammer and its variants.
Well, AMD has made some strange decisions in the past - Athlon still slips as uneasily off the tongue as a snail roller blading, and Duron is too close to a brand of condom to call.

The names AMD has registered are Forton, Metaron, Multeon, Vanton and Opteron.

We think it had better put those names in the back of a filing cabinet marked rubbish and think again.

Unlike Big Brother Intel, AMD doesn't spend much of its time thinking up crazy trade names to register such as Intel Hotels of Distinction or the letter "i", so there may be some credence to the Hammer possibility.

Why doesn't it just stick with Claw-H, Hammer and the rest? They're perfectly good names.

Here's the story. µ
