Saefong, CBS.MarketWatch.com Last Update: 4:13 PM ET Jan. 29, 2002 NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Investor interest in the gold market on the back of a sharp decline in the overall stock market Tuesday pulled a key index of metals stocks to its highest level in eight months. ................................................................................................................... Gold prices also posted sizable gains on the heels of the rise in metals company stocks. "To determine why gold bounced today all one had to do was notice equities and the (U.S.) dollar getting clobbered," said Erik Gebhard, an analyst at Altavest.com. "The yellow metal was allowed out of hiding and short covering propelled the market as much as $3 higher."
