Judicial watchdog cleared of practicing law illegally
The Ohio Supreme Court disciplinary counsel's charges that judicial watchdog David Palmer practiced law without a license were dismissed without fanfare on Dec. 31.

"It's a big surprise, and it's depressing at the same time,'' Palmer said. "I wanted to make asses out of them.''

Of 34 complaints against persons accused of unauthorized-law-practice during the past six years, three were dismissed. Palmer's case makes it four.

"There is no evidence that anyone was misled into believing that Palmer is admitted to practice law in Ohio,'' J. Jeffrey McNealey, chairman of the Board of Commissioners on the Unauthorized Practice of Law, said in a nine-page report.

Assistant Disciplinary Counsel Lori J. Brown said the dismissal can't be appealed.

But the case isn't quite over. Palmer plans to ask the board to reimburse his expenses up to $300.

"The taxpayers got hosed on this one,'' he said. "Free legal advice is obviously worth a lot more than what their lawyers were billing for. If they hired the dog to prosecute the case, I would have looked over it and dumped it.''
