An XP caution.

I've found from friends that have been using XP that they generally like the operating system....stability etc. One problem that I'd say people have to be aware of before they decide to use XP, particularly if they have only one PC (and don't set up a dual boot), is peripheral hardware compatibility...scanners and printers etc. Many scanner and printer manufacturers have not updated their drivers to make (all) their printers and scanners XP compatible.

So...if you own an older (or in some cases not very old) printer or scanner, you should check the manufacturer's web site to see if they offer an XP driver. Microsoft claims that many printers and scanners will run ok with the drivers that are contained on the XP CD. I've heard otherwise from too many people to put all your trust in that possibility.

It is very frustrating to get a new computer with XP or upgrade the operating system on an old pc and then find out that you're faced with the prospect of dishing out unexpected additional $'s for a new printer or scanner.

I'm still using Win 98 SE, but I'm a little ticked at the prospect that many consumers, who are unaware, will be surprised when they find out that they will be forced to buy new peripherals when they upgrade to XP. Sometimes the PC industry takes the old saying "buyer beware" to ridiculous extreme.

I know that some say that the peripheral manufacturers need time to issue XP drivers...how long has XP been out now? Many manufacturers still have not issued XP drivers and the prospect for a lot of older peripherals is not looking good.
