I view debt as an expression of consumer confidence. Most consumers (the 80 percent who aren't planning their next bankruptcy) try to incur only debt that they feel confident about paying back in the future. People tend to pay down debt when they are in a hunkering down mode and are worried about the future.

I don't know if the statistics back that up, it's just my perception.
