The truest test of leadership in the Media Age is the ability to do what needs to be done in the face of the often-manufactured criticism of the press. Bush, Rumsfeld et al. since Sept. 11 have shown a great ability to sort out what matters and what doesn't.

Will North Korea lob a missile at Seattle?

Of course not.

Will Iraq or Iran lob a missile at the Carolina coast?

Of course not.

Will those countries and their terror agents attack Americans and American interests wherever they can be found?

Of course not. They are peace loving peoples until provoked by evil America.

And finally, a question from last year: Would a band of Islamic students and Arab nut cases in a landlocked country eleven time zones away have the ability to replace the most vibrant section of lower Manhattan with an ugly crater-like pile of ash entombing thousands of Americans?

Oh, of course not. That will never happen. We should just leave them alone and stop our own awful misbehaving, rather than pandering to our military industrial complex and causing more (gasp!) bloodshed.

Sheesh.
