Taiwan's UMC 2001 loss slightly below mkt estimates

TAIPEI, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) <2303.TW> , the world's second-largest contract chipmaker, posted an unaudited T$0.24 loss per share in 2001 on Thursday, slightly below analyst estimates of a T$0.20 loss.



The 2001 result was down from earnings per share of T$4.57 in 2000, and represented a net loss of T$3.16 billion, down from a T$50.78 billion net profit in 2000, the company's most profitable year.
